Give the Gift of Life during National Blood Donor Month

January 20, 2023

National Blood Donor Month is recognized each January. Read more to learn about why blood donation is so important and how you can make a difference.

While blood donations are necessary and in demand year-round, the month of January is annually observed as National Blood Donor Month. Blood donations are essential for cancer treatment, surgeries, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries every day. According to the American Red Cross, someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds. Giving blood is a great way to contribute to your community and have a positive impact on the health of your neighbors. In fact, a one-time blood donation can save the lives of up to three people.

Blood donation is a simple, four-step process that includes registration, a confidential medical history survey and a mini-physical, the donation process itself and a post-donation snack and beverage. The brief mini-physical checks your body temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure your blood is safe to donate. The actual blood donation takes about eight to 10 minutes. After your donation, you’ll enjoy a refreshing snack and be back to your regular daily routine after a short rest.

Some Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Donors can give either whole blood or specific blood components (red cells, plasma or platelets).
  • Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of red cells, plasma and platelets. The body will replenish the elements given during a blood donation – some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks.
  • All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other infectious diseases before it is released to hospitals.
