Clinch Valley Health was proud to participate in the Rotary Club of Tazewell’s first meeting of 2025.
CEO Peter Mulkey spoke during the meeting about Clinch Valley Health’s mission, vision and focus for the hospital and practices, as well as the services it proudly offers to Tazewell County and surrounding communities. Clinch Valley Health’s mission is simple – making communities healthier. Mulkey is advancing the organization’s mission is by raising awareness around the importance of getting annual health screenings, taking a proactive role in healthcare and getting established with a primary care provider.
During his talk, Mulkey highlighted PSA screenings, mammography, automated breast ultrasound, and screening colonoscopies, and the importance of incorporating exercise into often sedentary lifestyles.
Along with an overview of annual screenings, Mulkey explained the ages recommended for people to start getting each screening. Mulkey said, “From a mammography standpoint, the annual screenings start at age 40. There are some caveats to that, for instance if you have a family history, like your mother or sisters had breast cancer, the rule of thumb is you have you first mammography 10 years earlier than when they were first diagnosed with breast cancer. If your mom was diagnosed at age 35 and your sister was diagnosed at age 37, then you need to get your first mammography at age 25.”
Mulkey joined Clinch Valley Health’s leadership team in 2005 and has been the Chief Executive Officer since 2013. He is a graduate of Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy and earned his Master’s in Health Care Administration from Trinity University. Mulkey serves on the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association Board of Directors, received LifePoint Health’s Fleetwood Award and has been named as the Richlands Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year in 2016.
The Rotary Club of Tazewell is one of thousands of local Rotary clubs around the world — all of which are part of Rotary International. They are a service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.
