Clinch Valley Health Now Offering Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy

Clinch Valley Health's Radiation Therapy team led by Radiation Oncologist Dr. Marcus Brown
The Radiation Therapy department at Clinch Valley Medical Center has undergone a significant upgrade in 2024, enhancing its capabilities to deliver highly effective doses of radiation with unprecedented precision. The department now boasts a state-of-the-art large bore 4D CT unit and the Versa HD linear accelerator, enabling the facility to expand its cancer treatment services to include Radiosurgery.
Radiosurgery is a cutting-edge treatment technique that utilizes highly focused, tightly conformed beams to deliver high doses of radiation specifically to tumors, while sparing the normal structures surrounding those tumors. This approach allows for the delivery of the radiosurgery dose of radiation in a single fraction or treatment visit, known as Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS). SRS is commonly used to treat tumors in the brain.
Additionally, the new equipment enables the delivery of the radiosurgery dose over a course of 5 fractions or less, treated within a 2-week period. This technique, known as Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), is effective for treating small tumors in various parts of the body, particularly early-stage lung cancer.
Dr. Marcus Brown serves as the Radiation Oncologist at Clinch Valley Medical Center, overseeing the implementation of these advanced treatment modalities. Although radiosurgery is an effective and non-invasive method of cancer treatment, it may not be suitable for every patient. The appropriateness of treatment for each potential candidate can only be determined after a thorough evaluation by a radiation therapy physician specialist.
Clinch Valley Health CEO Peter Mulkey expressed enthusiasm for the upgraded department, stating, "The investment in our Radiation Therapy department reflects our commitment to providing the highest quality care to our community. These advanced technologies allow us to offer cutting-edge treatments that can significantly improve outcomes for patients facing cancer."
